The stripy blanket has returned!

It has come home! The final blanket has been doing the rounds, being knitted up by lots of very kind people, and to all of you involved, thank-you so much. This blanket is wonderful and I am in awe of some of the beautiful stitch work (who did the green stripe, 4th from right? What is that stitch? How did you do it? It's like woven fabric). I am busy knitting a border round it as we speak. It is taking a very long time though. Not only there hundreds of stitches on it, but the blanket is so warm and cosy that within minutes of me picking up the needles, it has sent me fast asleep.

I never know if stripey has an e or not. Spell check says I can have it either way. And on the subject of spellings, youngest son has come home with 'gibbous' in his spelling book tonight. Will someone please enlighten me - what on earth does it mean? I can honestly say that I've never used the word in my entire life. Does anyone else get stupid spellings sent home to learn, or is it just me?

But then you may not think that gibbous is a stupid word and that it's used every day in your house.

But it isn't here!

Ooh! can spot my stripe (not the fancy green one!) Does gibbous have somethig to do with the moon? Never used it myself though.

The strip(e)y blanket looks lovely!

As for "gibbous", Dictionary.com says: "Astronomy. (of a heavenly body) convex at both edges, as the moon when more than half full. "

Oh I recognise that blanket too! I did a blue and a green stripe (but not the one you like)but it seems ages ago. Michaela I don't know whether to thank you or curse you, :) I saw the golden wedding blanket you recently started and it inspired me to start one too but I've only got just over a month to get it done. I ordered some yarn yesterday and hope it gets here tomorrow. I won't be doing it as big as you as I just haven't got the time. Knitting is supposed to be relaxing so why do I keep doing things to deadlines??

I remember "gibbous" from my Astronomy class in college...it's a "gibbous moon" when it's growing from halfmoon to fullmoon.

Thank heavens that came in useful. Now I feel better about the thousands in student loans I spent years paying off! ;)

I was going to say the same thing about the moon! I wouldn't have known normally but my daughter did GCSE Astromy last year (2 years early). Its not normally a word that many households would use I wouldn't think! Love the blanket (can you explain how it came about please) as I have only been along for the ride for a while and missed this one.

Ooh, lovely to see the blanket again! I didn't do the green stripe but I did do the pinky-red one next to it. Did Trashy do the green one? Trying to remember who I sent it to!

I'll be looking out for the next gibbous moon just so's I can say 'my word we do have a very gibbous moon tonight!'.

All right. Yes, it is my blurry fault no one knows who did what because I have very carefully put away the tracking card that came with the blanket. But one day you shall all be laughing out ofthe other side of your faces when I find it and can give you every last detail. Ha! Who is going to look so silly then!

The blanket looks fabulous! But I would have had no idea what gibbous meant if I hadn't read the other comments! Does he have to write a sentence about it too? That's what my guys always have to do and it gets a bit tricky with some of the ridiculous words they come home with! (Can't think of any good examples at the moment though)

Petrocore - that's a good word!

Next time you hear the youngest son read and you leave a comment on the card, casually drop in a word that his teacher or TA will have to look up the meaning of.

Does gibbous come up somewhere in the Science SATs? Maybe that is the reasoning behind its inclusion.

I did know gibbous was something to do with the moon, but I have never used it. And just be thankful you didn't think strip(e)y was spelled "strippy" as I have see on more than one occasion! "Strippy tigers" fill me with fear and dread!

The green one was me. I will look out the pattern again and let you know in an email. It is lovely isn't it and does look very like a fabric. Glad you liked it!

Ooops just re-read that. I meant the pattern itself was lovely, not my stripe :0|
